Mentorship Program

FOR 2020 SPRING, DUE TO THE COVID-19 CRISIS AND SCHOOL SHUTDOWN, ALL MENTOR MEETINGS ARE BEING HELD VIRTUALLY, IF MENTORS ARE ABLE, FOR THE DURATION OF THIS SCHOOL YEAR. STUDENTS PARTICIPATING IN THE PROGRAM SHOULD CHECK THEIR EMAILS FOR DIRECT COMMUNICATION FROM THEIR MENTORS. WE HOPE TO RESUME OUR IN-PERSON MENTORING PROGRAM IN THE FALL.

Can you think of a mentor in your life who influenced your decisions, habits, or future for the better? You could be that mentor to a high school student! Each year in the fall, Clairemont High School recruits industry and community volunteers who would like to mentor students in each of our Academy Pathways. Our goal is to connect every 11th grader at CHS with a mentor who can share their interests and hard-won wisdom as they guide our students through the challenges of academics and career decision-making. If you believe that education and student guidance are foundational to our society, please read on and volunteer to become a mentor today!

Apply to Mentor

Apply to mentor here by completing our online Mentor Application Profile Form 2019-20. This form will require 15 minutes to complete as it provides us with a detailed profile of each volunteer and helps us carefully match mentors to students. Mentor Program Overview

  • Structure: Mentors meet with CHS 11th grade students monthly on campus on the 2nd Friday of the month for about one hour and a half.
  • Materials: All forms, session agendas, monthly activities, and training materials are provided.
  • Commitment: Mentors make an 8 month commitment: one meeting per month October through May. It is important that mentors attend each and every session.
  • Session Topics: Agendas are pre-planned and focus on topics such as: Communication, SMART Goals, Academic Success, Action Planning, Career-Planning, and Resume & Interview Skills.
  • Location: Sessions are held at the Clairemont High School Library, supervised by CHS staff.
  • Times: Sessions are each 85 minutes in length including mentor announcements prior to each student meeting. Mentors choose one time block to commit to for the year.
    • 9:00 am - 10:25 am or
    • 10:30 am - 11:55 am
  • Dates: All mentor monthly sessions are on the 2nd Friday of each month. Exact dates are pre-scheduled (see below) and can also be found, with specified meeting topics, on our Meeting Dates Topics CHS Mentor Program 2019-20
    • Session 1: Friday October 11, 2019
    • Session 2: Friday November 8, 2019
    • Session 3: Friday December 13, 2019
    • Session 4: Friday January 10, 2020
    • Session 5 (WINDOW): February 3-27, 2020
    • Session 6: Friday March 13, 2020
    • Session 7: Friday April 17, 2020
    • Session 8: Friday May 8, 2020

Application Process to Become a Mentor:

STEP 1: MENTOR APPLICATION & PROFILE FORM ONLINE

Adult community partners interested in mentoring should read the details of the mentor program carefully on this page, especially the Scheduled Mentor Meetings, and then fill out the online Mentor Application Profile Form as early as possible. Potential mentor applications will be reviewed, and those selected to mentor for the year will be contacted by Clairemont High.

STEP 2. VOLUNTEER PAPERWORK AND PROOF OF CLEAR TB TEST

All volunteers in SD Unified School District must complete the Volunteer Application and Code of Conduct and be able to provide proof of a Clear TB (Tuberculosis) test current within the last four years OR Complete the Adult Tuberculosis (TB) Risk Assessment Questionnaire and have it signed by a licensed healthcare provider. If you have had a TB test done in the last four years, simply provide written proof of clear test to the Mentor Program Coordinator. If you do not qualify for the questionnaire clearance, and need to have a test done, please see your medical provider or any clinic to complete the two-part test and then ask for written confirmation of clear test using this form: SDUSD Volunteer TB Test Card. Once you have all elements of the volunteer packet, including TB Test, complete, please submit documents to Liz Rush, Mentor Program Coordinator: erush@sandi.net.

 

STEP 3. MENTOR ORIENTATION

All mentors must attend one orientation. Each one is held at Clairemont High School. For 2018-19, Mentor Orientations will be held on:

  • Option B: Tu Oct 1, 2019 from 8am - 9:30am @ CHS
  • Option C: Tu Oct 8, 2019 from 8:30-10am @ CHS
  • Option D: Fri Oct 11, 2019 from 8:30-10am @ CHS

STEP 4: MATCHING STUDENTS TO MENTORS

Academy staff carefully match each mentor with a student group based on similarities such as personality traits, hobbies, and career interests. Mentors and students each fill out an extensive profile that helps make this match. The mentoring relationships will formally last one school year. In the past, the majority of our mentors and students have agreed they were very well matched! STEP 5: LIVESCAN FINGERPRINTING

Due to district volunteer guidelines, any mentors wishing to particpate in the Job Shadow Fieldtrip experience (February Mentor Session) need to complete LiveScan fingerprinting. This is in order to allow mentors to leave campus and be responsible for students without CHS staff supervision. Please note: mentors wishing to particpate in the program, but not the Job Shadow, may choose to forego the Livescan requirement as long as they set up some sort of alternative experiential job shadow visit for their students. For all mentors wishing to chaparone their own job shadow trip with their students, we ask they please complete the Livescan no later than the December meeting. Scheduling a Livescan is the responsibility of the mentor and must be completed through the San Diego Unified School District's Police Services Livescan Department.

INFO ON LIVESCAN THROUGH SCHOOL DISTRICT POLICE DEPT:

The San Diego School Police Services Office office is located in University Heights at: 4100 Normal St., San Diego, CA 92103 Room 1241. Hours are Monday through Friday: 9:00 a.m. - 3:30 p.m. For more information, go to the SDUSD Police Services LiveScan Page. When you go in for your LiveScan, you will need to take a proper form of ID and the completed Request to Conduct Volunteer Screening. (Please print this form and fill out to take with you.) To properly fill out this form, please follow these simple instructions:

  • Please check CATEGORY D - Volunteer Fingerprint" at the top of the form.
  • For REQUESTING SCHOOL" please write in Clairemont High Mentor Program"
  • For VOL. COORDINATOR," please write in Liz Rush."
  • For Volunteer Activity" please Check Other" and write in Mentor"

When you go in, be sure to tell them you are a volunteer for Clairemont High's Mentor Program. PLEASE NOTE: Results usually take two weeks or more to process, so mentors should begin as soon as possible. If you have received a LiveScan through San Diego Unified School District in the last year, or you are already a district employee, your info should already be on file. Please contact the office above and they will confirm. Mentor Volunteers who received a Livescan with San Diego School Police last year do not have to do the entire fingerprinting process again. Instead, returning mentors need only fill out the form, print returning mentor" at the top, and fax in the form to the number listed on the sheet.

Mentor Responsibilities

We expect mentors to:

  • Commit to attending all scheduled meetings for the year
  • Be on time to meetings and CHS staff if there is a sudden conflict
  • Be positive
  • Share with students about your career, successes, lessons learned, etc.
