Each Fall, Clairemont High School recruits industry and community volunteers who would like to mentor students in each of our academies. Our goal is to connect every 11th grader at CHS with a mentor who can share their interests and wisdom as they guide our students through the challenges of academics and career decision making. Apply to mentor by completing our online Mentor Application and Profile Form 2023-24. In order to help us carefully match mentors to students, this form takes approximately 15 minutes to complete as it provides us with a detailed profile of each volunteer.

Mentor Program Overview
Scheduled Mentor Meetings for 2023-24: all meetings will be held the 2nd Thursday of the month. See schedule and topics here.
Times for 2023-24: sessions are 90 minutes in length including mentor announcements prior to each student meeting. Mentors choose one time block to commit to for the year.
- 8:45 - 10:15 am (Business students)
- 10:20 - 11:50 am (Engineering Pathway / IT & Game Design students)
- 12:30 - 2:00 pm (Health & Medical Sciences students)
Commitment: mentors make a 9-month commitment: orientation in September then one meeting per month, October through May. It is important that mentors attend every session.
Location: Clairemont High School Library, supervised by CHS staff
Materials: all forms, session agendas, pre-planned monthly activities and training materials are provided.
Mentor Meeting Topics: agendas are pre-planned and focus on topics such as: Communication, SMART Goals, Academic Success, Action Planning, Budgeting, Career Planning, Resume & Interview Skills. See our Mentor Handbook for details.
Process to Become a Volunteer Mentor
STEP 1: COMPLETE MENTOR APPLICATION & PROFILE FORM ONLINE
Community and industry partners interested in mentoring should read the details of the Mentor Program carefully on this page and then fill out the online Mentor Application & Profile Form.
STEP 2: MENTOR ORIENTATION
All new mentors who apply must attend one orientation before meeting with students:
Sept 21 (Thursday) 11:30 am to 12:30 pm
Oct 5 (Thursday) 4:30-5:30 pm
STEP 3: VOLUNTEER SCREENING AND PAPERWORK
Mentors must follow our District volunteer screening requirements. Volunteers must:
- Get background clearance through the Live Scan fingerprinting process. New volunteers submit their fingerprints to both State and National databases. Volunteers will need to pay the Live Scan fees directly to the Live Scan administrator
- Volunteers must complete the “Request to Conduct Volunteer Screening” with the principal’s signature prior to being fingerprinted

Required Paperwork:
- Copy of one form of current government-issued photo identification (driver’s license, passport, military ID, US or other government identification)

- Present a Tuberculosis clearance card, complete the TB Risk Assessment Questionnaire or provide a copy of proof of negative TB Test result current within the last 12 months
- Mentor Contract
Additionally:
- When on campus, mentors must always sign in and out at the CHS Office
- Mentors need to wear a volunteer identification badge to be left at CHS at the conclusion of the day’s volunteer activity

STEP 4: MATCHING STUDENTS TO MENTORS
Clairemont High School’s academy staff carefully match each mentor with a student group based on similarities such as personality traits, hobbies and career interests. Mentors and students each fill out an extensive application profile that helps make this match. The mentoring relationships will formally last one school year. In the past, the majority of our mentors and students have agreed they were well matched!
Mentor Responsibilities
- Commit to attending all 9 scheduled on-campus meetings for the year
- Be on time to meetings and alert CHS staff if there is a sudden conflict
- Have a positive attitude
- Share with students about career, successes, lessons learned, etc.
- Listen to students with an open mind
- Complete all forms related to the volunteer process noted above
- Respond to email correspondences in a timely manner
- Be a resource to students when they desire career advice or business contacts
- Notify CHS staff if students need additional guidance or if the mentor has any concerns
- Attend Mentor Orientation before meeting students at the first session
- Agree to the terms in the Mentor Contract before meeting students at the first session
